Welcoming Guests Since 1872

Woodlands Estate is a beautifully preserved 19th-century heritage homestead and garden located in the heart of Gordonton, Waikato. Once a working farm and now a vibrant community space, it has evolved into a much-loved destination — blending heritage, hospitality, and horticulture in a way that’s welcoming to all.

After the four families who once called Woodlands home departed, the Estate came under the ownership of the Waikato District Council in 1988. A Trust was established, and staff were employed to care for the gardens and preserve the historic homestead, ensuring its legacy is protected for future generations.

Visitors to Woodlands Estate can enjoy the historic homestead, beautifully landscaped gardens, and our café, housed in the old Te Rapa Bowling Clubhouse. The English Cricket Oval provides a scenic backdrop for relaxing with a meal or watching a friendly game of cricket — making it one of the best places in Waikato to spend a leisurely day.

Whether you’re exploring the gardens, celebrating a birthday or anniversary, enjoying the café, or letting the kids run on the lawns, there’s something for everyone. Seasonal events, garden tours, and peaceful open spaces make Woodlands Estate a must-visit destination in Gordonton.

As a community-run, not-for-profit organisation, every visit, donation, booking, or helping hand goes straight back into preserving and improving the Estate. Come and explore, get involved, and discover why Woodlands Estate is one of Waikato’s hidden gems — cherished by locals and unforgettable for visitors.

Gordonton Woodlands Trust

Woodlands Estate is community-owned and operated by the Gordonton Woodlands Trust Board, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving the heritage, beauty, and purpose of this historic estate for public enjoyment.

The Trust is responsible for maintaining the 19th-century homestead, while a small, dedicated team manages daily operations, seasonal events, and the visitor experience, ensuring every guest can enjoy the gardens, grounds, and historic spaces.

The Estate sits on land designated as a heritage reserve, owned by Waikato District Council. The Council works in close partnership with the Trust to care for the gardens and grounds, ensuring that Woodlands Estate continues to be a cherished community asset, a welcoming destination, and a highlight of Gordonton and the wider Waikato region.
